View Full Version : Basic Tutorial On How To Make AMV's with WMM

aight even though most of the tutorials here r for sigs and colorings with photoshop. i wanted to make a tutorial for amvs to stop the "hi i am a newb and how do u make amvs?" questions. This tutorial will help noobs get started on the basics of amv making. i was also thinking of making a tutorial for premiere for the people who have outgrown WMM, but for now its gunna be WMM

NOTE : DO NOT USE REAL MEDIA FILES!!! ALSO STOP ASKING ME WHERE TO GET THE DAMN CLIPS. YOU ARE ON A ANIME SITE LOOK AROUND FOR DOWNLOADS!!

EDIT : Here's Part 1 : Getting Started

First and obviously u gotta open up WMM, if u dont kno where it is, it shud be in Start > Programs and its either in accessories or in the list like this http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1931/wherewmmpp6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Now this is the WMM interface. http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9652/wmminterfaceda9.th.jpg (http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wmminterfaceda9.jpg)

its not as impressive as vegas or premiere but its much more simple.

Now we want to import some clips of our favorite anime of NARUTO!!

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/268/importingclipslz8.th.jpg (http://img95.imageshack.us/my.php?image=importingclipslz8.jpg)

one of the good things about WMM is that u can import the whole episode. in vegas and premiere they wont accept DivX or XviD files
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/7817/creatingclipsml9.th.jpg (http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=creatingclipsml9.jpg)
this might take a while so just kill some time while waiting.

now u shud have a number of clips like so

http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/6223/clipsqn1.th.jpg (http://img50.imageshack.us/my.php?image=clipsqn1.jpg)

u will probably have like 10x more clips than me becuase i didnt feel like importing the whole episode so i just cut out a part with virtualdubmod and imported that.

END OF STEP 1.

NEXT GUIDE : STEP 2 & 3 BASIC EDITING

Up In FlameZ♥
08-03-2006, 02:08 AM
STEP 2 : Audio and Transitions

Aight so u got your clips and now what? well we gotta get some music so go to the 'Import Audio or Music' right here http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9111/importingaudioyy6.th.jpg (http://img215.imageshack.us/my.php?image=importingaudioyy6.jpg)

search for your mp3 or wav or whaterever file and wait for it to import. since it is a song, it shud take like 2 seconds to completely import. now drag your music file onto to the timeline like so http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5783/audioontimelinexg6.th.jpg (http://img222.imageshack.us/my.php?image=audioontimelinexg6.jpg)
make sure to put it on the 'Audio/Music' not the 'Audio' above it.

now for the clips. do the same and drag the clips onto the timeline like the audio. if u were to play it right now, u would probably hear ur song and ur clip's audio (ex. story of the year singing and naruto yelling dattebayo.)
now we dont want that so simple right click on the clips audio track and click on 'Mute' http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/6241/mutingclipsc0.th.jpg (http://img111.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mutingclipsc0.jpg)

now if u play it, u shud only hear the audio u imported.

now for transitions and effects. most people new to video editing will only think of effects. transitions r just as important. a transition is the effect between clips (ex. a basic clip fades into another clip)

To make a simple fade transition, put two clips next to each and click on the 'View Video Transitions'
http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/4388/transitionsza5.th.jpg (http://img105.imageshack.us/my.php?image=transitionsza5.jpg)

here's where the transitions r. u can view the transitons by clicking on them and pressing play. scroll down to the fade transition and drag onto the timeline
BETWEEN THE TWO CLIPS]
now if u were to watch it, at the end of your first clips it will fade into the next clips. Let's say u wanted it to fade eariler and longer. this is really simple just drag the second clip more over the first clip like so http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/8928/extendingtransitionxm5.th.jpg (http://img164.imageshack.us/my.php?image=extendingtransitionxm5.jpg)
let's say i didnt want the fade transition any more. instead i want the circle transition. so i go to the circle transition and drag it over on top of the fade transition. http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/2075/switchingtransitionif2.th.jpg (http://img159.imageshack.us/my.php?image=switchingtransitionif2.jpg)

END OF STEP 2

Next section is gunna be STEP 3 : Effects and Trimming Clips

Up In FlameZ♥
08-03-2006, 02:27 AM
STEP 3 : Effects and Trimming Clips

WMM doesnt have spectacular effects like premiere and vegas do. it has simple ones like : fade out to white, greyscale (black&white),brightness increase, etc.

there r two ways to add video effects. u can do it like the transitions and go to the 'View Video Effects' or u can use the way thats much more faster. simply right click your clip and select video effects http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/4162/videoeffectslz8.th.jpg (http://img130.imageshack.us/my.php?image=videoeffectslz8.jpg)

if u do go this way u will get a window like this : http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/5011/addorremoveeffectskq8.th.jpg (http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=addorremoveeffectskq8.jpg)

here u can easily add or remove the effects to your liking.

Now onto trimming your clips. a simple way to split your clip is select the clip u want by clicking it and hovering your mouse on the edge of the clip till ur mouse turns into this http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/9550/trimjj2.jpg drag this over to the desired length till the clip is trimmed.
now the most accurate method of trimming a clip is stop your video at the point u want it to be split at and the press the split button http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/7765/splitbuttonii5.th.jpg (http://img67.imageshack.us/my.php?image=splitbuttonii5.jpg)
this will split your video into two clips. if u split it and watched it like that, then u would see no difference. because the end frame of your first is the beginning frame of your second clip. now u do what u want with it :P

END OF STEP 3

Next Guide : Making Titles and Exporting/Saving your final video.

STEP 4 : Making Titles and Exporting/Saving your final video

lets start with the titles. i'm sure u have seen some really cool videos with awesome titles with shining text and all that stuff. hate to disappoint u, but with WMM u can only make basic titles. but u dont always to make flashy titles to have a good video. what if u had a great opening scene with all these fancy titles and your main video was a piece of shit...anyway moving on

to make titles click the 'Make titles or Credits'
http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/6127/titlesrx8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

when it comes up with the menu for 'Make titles, Make Credits, Make Title at end of video, etc. ignore that stuff and click whichever u want. u can pick where u want to place the title at anytime. Click 'Change Animation' to view various animations for the titles.
pick the one u want and then click 'Change the text and font color' tweak the settings to your likings
and then click 'Edit Title Text' and type your text. depending on what u picked for the 'Animation' the text box will differ

Below r the screenshots of the boxes i just mentioned above.

Title Animation : http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/50/titleanimationls1.jpg

Edit Title Text(Rolling Credits):http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/713/edittextfortitlepk6.jpg

Change Text and Font : http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/1783/editfontandcoloray4.jpg

Now for exporting the final video.

NOTE : Saving your project is different than saving your video. your project is the project with all your editied clips and audio put together. the final video is the one u export and upload to amv.org,youtube.etc

For saving your project go to File > Save Project

For exporting your movie go to 'Save To My Computer' right here
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/6238/savefinalmoviekk4.th.jpg (http://img128.imageshack.us/my.php?image=savefinalmoviekk4.jpg)

This window will come up where u can enter the desired movie name and desired output location, use browse to find the place u want your movie to be saved to.

Press Next and then this window will come up
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/857/exportsettingsks0.th.jpg (http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=exportsettingsks0.jpg)

the settings r completely up to u. the settings i marked in blue r the ones i recommend. The exported movies will be in WMV format and when the export settings were talking about High Quality Video (Large)(Small). They r refering to the video size and not how much it takes up on your harddrive.

The Large one will be 640 x 480 which is the most common resoultion
the small one will 320 x 240 which is a mini version of the one above.

rememeber these settings r completely up to u. u can try out some different ones if u dont like my recommended ones.

Finally press 'Next' and your movie will be exported! also it is recommended that u dont use any other programs while exporting it.

TIPS & TRICKS
umm these arent really tricks but mainly tips. if u want to make a fade transition instead of always going to the transitions box just drag your second clip partially over your first clip, but do not drag it entirely over the clip becuase that will cancel the transition.

also try to avoid anime scenes plus linkin park. trust me linkin park is one of my favorite bands but linkin park and some anime fight scenes is really unoriginal. go to youtube and type in linkin park and naruto and u will see LOTS and LOTS of results

also try to do some real editing, not just taking your favorite song and adding a few clips of sasuke and naruto fight. that is just a plain boring amv. do some good syncs. like when there is a loud cymbal clash or drum beat make an explosion or something

finally if there is something u dont get in this guide just post here and ask me

happy amv making!

Well I just skimmed through the tutorial, back in grade 9 I taught myself how to use it, then one upped my tech teacher, it was hilarious.

Anyway, I'm in the finishing process of creating a; How to Make Clips/How to Remove Subtitles and Letterbox/How to Watermarking Tutorial. Hopefully it will be up sometime today.

Hopefully that can fill up any missing gaps in AMV making, no?

download the clips/episodes on your own using limewire or bittorrent or something

or you can rip from DVD's which is the best way of doing it

if you have windows you probably have it on your computer already...if you dont then just google it and you'll find a download

i think on the left of the timeline theres a volume thing that lets you adjust the sound of the clip you've selected

Hay, I was planning to make an Elfen Lied AMV, but all of my episodes are in .mkv formate which WMM tells me doesn't work with it. Do you know if there's a way to get around this or if other freeware editing simple GUI software which supports Xvid exists. I already tried Vdub, and I believe I have a few years of learning before I can actually comprehend what is happening in that program. I have played with Ulead and found it to my liking, but it too doesn't seem to like the .mkv files.

I've got a (hopefully not dumb to you) question.
I have DivX, but when I try to import the video I have... it still doesn't work,
the same thing pops up for me with each movie I have:

C:\Documents and Settings\Alaina\My Documents\My Videos\DivX Movies\[Kuro-Hana]_Death_Note_-_25_[C31EF0AF].avi could not be imported. The required codec was not downloaded automatically because the Download codecs automatically check box is not selected in the Options dialog box.

thanks to this tutorial, though it's fairly easy to figure out how WMM works, I just didn't know how to "convert" the video from a project to a movie. Now I know, thanks to you. Now I need to find a tutorial on how to convert the movie into a DVD format... the free-er the better :)

@tellmewhattherainknows, uninstall your DivX and install it back, try that.

u will probably have like 10x more clips than me becuase i didnt feel like importing the whole episode so i just cut out a part with virtualdubmod and imported that.

Okay, I hope this hasn't been addressed, but in regards to this, if you do just want to upload the clips/pieces and not the entire entire episode, how do you use this 'virtualdubmod' to cut out the pieces you want? Is it a seperate program?

By the way, thanks so much for this tutorial, you are better at explaining this then pretty much all of my friends.

Up In FlameZ♥
09-05-2007, 09:12 PM
Yes VirtualDubMod is a seperate program. Follow Kira's tutorial on how to make GIFs. It show how to cut the region of the video you want and save it. Except don't save it as an image sequence. Just go to File > Save As.

Also in Kira's tutorial he uses VirtualDub. Not much of a difference between VD and VDM except that VDM has MKV and OGM video file support. And it sounds like you're going to cut them for something like youtube, dailymotion.etc?

kuroi_atropos
09-06-2007, 11:51 AM
Okay, I apologize for bugging you again...

When I import my nomral .AVIs, like that I've downloaded, it doesn't import the video. The sound comes through just fine, but the screen/image is totally blank/black. I double checked the steps, and I am pretty sure that I imported the file correctly. No error screens pop up, so I have no idea what to do. Am I missing a codec or something?

kuroi_atropos
09-06-2007, 11:55 AM
And not really youtube or anything, it's just that several of the clips I want are kind of long and I don't want to cut it up more then I have too. weirdly enough, I don't mind downloading episodes, but I kind of squick at posting the whole things on youtube. I think that the people who take the time and effort to fansub the shows should get more credit then that.
