360: No surrender
10:45, Jul 28th by Neil Long
Just when we all thought the sniping between the format holders was over, Microsoft’s Richard Teversham has dismissed the launch plans of rivals Sony and Nintendo – whilst hinting at “surprise” spoiler tactics this Q4.
Speaking exclusively to MCV, Teversham questioned whether his competitors could launch their consoles in Europe this year and even accused Sony of abusing its fanbase to sell PS3s at £425.

“Sony has got great loyalty and they are going to seriously use that loyalty to ensure that they sell a console,” said Teversham. “On day one they will have pre-sold most of what they’ve got. But the question is, will they actually be able to launch in Europe and if they do, what are the tiny quantities going to be in Europe.

“And although Wii is almost a GameCube with a DVD drive, is Nintendo going to have enough quantity to satisfy the demand?”

While Teversham ruled out a cut on 360’s SRP before Christmas, he went on to slam PS3’s price tag. “The question is: When are they going to drop the price? I think a lot of gamers out there are going to be saying ‘I’ll wait for the price to drop,’ or even better they’ll buy a 360.”

Teversham also warned that Microsoft has a few spoilers planned for Q4. “I don’t want to reveal any plans at the moment because we want to keep a number of surprises up our sleeve. We will ensure we are good value and we’ll do that through having a variety of pricing on games, a variety of pricing on console offers.”

Teversham went on record to talk about Microsoft's new portable media device project Zune too, as he told MCV: "It is a combination of hardware and software. As for rollout and compatibility you’re going to have to watch this space - when we launch there will be a lot of noise around it. It’s about Microsoft bringing together communities on devices like Xbox, Zune and PC."

Microsoft talking about not enough consoles for launch? :laugh The hypocrites

The Wii and PS3 will sell out

Funny how they can say this when the 360 has tons of consoles left over from their launch and relaunch in Japan :laugh

Original GBA's sell more than Xbox's. Last week I think NOONE bought a Xbox at all, and maybe 500 360's were sold.

MS should learn to keep it's mouth shut, because they have so many limbs the be shot at that they were shooting those limbs themselves.

They should just quit in Japan, or just wait till Blue Dragon is released.

The Wii and PS3 will sell out

-- QFT-- If i remember correctly, that should be a 6 million-split sold evenly for the both of them-- which will surely surpass MS within 4 months time afterwards, if they continue their current route.

Both the Wii and the PS3 will sell out on launch, that's almost a given. The real question is will MS be able to gain momentum with the upcoming shortages( you know it's true) of both systems during the holiday season.

I don't think that they are being hypocrits, they know from experience how hard it is to do a world wide launch now, and they are just expressing thier doubt as to whether or not their competetors are up for the challenge. I also think that they think the Wii is going to sell really well, because by saying that it is a gamecube with a DVD drive, they are basically saying that it is really easy to produce and yet they think that they won't be able to meet demand even still.

Well, he could have said "Wii is probably easy to manufacture." Bastard. Don't offend the Wii.

Whatever. I think that he's right about Sony. Sony launches tend to be bugged. However, Nintendo has a solid track record with console launches. I highly doubt that Nintendo will meet demand, though. If Nintendo faces something like it is with the DS, then 2.2 million a month just isn't enough.

Did... did he just call the Wii a GameCube with a DVD drive?

Oh, hell no.

ACtually, apparantly there was a leak in the hardware specs. It kind of IS a gamecube with a DVD drive look:

Wii's "Broadway" CPU runs at 729 MHz; 243 MHz 64-bit memory bus (max. bandwidth: 1.9 GB/sec)
"Hollywood" GPU runs at 243 MHz, with 3 MB of internal graphics memory and 24 MB of high speed main memory (same GPU as in the Gamecube, but runs faster)

External Main Memory consists of 64 MB of GDDR3 RAM.

Optical Disc Drive supports Wii disks with either one (4.7 GB) or two (8.51 GB) sides or layers. Read speed is equivalent to DVDx6. GC discs are also supported
Additional Interfaces that come with the Wii: SD card slot, Wireless controller, two USB 2.0 ports, wireless LAN, 4x GC controller ports, 2x GC memory card slots and an AV multi output jack.
Wii controller features: Direct Pointing Device, Three axis accelerometer, Wii power button (remotely turn console on/off), buttons, wireless connectivity, indicator LED’s, rumble, battery powered (two AA alkaline batteries) and able to connect an extension unit.

People always get stuff the first day of release. New phones, games, and even movies. Doesn't prevent them for seeing horrible movies on their first day, which in a way is like a shoddy system; it sucks at that moment >_>

Jea it didn't but Sony has a bigger FANBASE then microsoft XBOX does. Plus PS2 = good so why would anyone who was just a casual gamer think anything bad about PS3? Price is the only thing holding it back but it's holiday season, people buy DVD players for 1,000 dollers still :laugh

Why would it only have two million if the amount that gets produced is higher then PS3 O_o, you honestly think nintendo is gonna be like "ok we got 2 million stop the presses"

Sony already said the number, nintendo hasn't but I am sure it will have more

I don't think so because didn't both go into producing the final version not to long ago? I thought both wanted to have 6 million units by March. Regardless 2 million systems sold out? That's pretty high why would you be laughing with that "Nut-face" thingy?

Cell processor yields are currently 10-20%.

Nintendo and Sony are going to have more than 2 Million at launch. For some reason, I recall hearing about more. Maybe I'm crazy, but with two million, that's a pretty low number, you know? Especially for the whole world.

Due to the complications of the PS3, I don't doubt the 2 million. However, the Wii should be easy to manufacture.

i dont see how there can be a question of nintendo selling out on release, nintendos fans alone will take care of that, then add in the low price of the wii.

simple sell out.

ps3 on the other hand....that price tag i see causing problems..im sure it will sell anyways..but i dont see it sellling as fast..

The " Wii " is expected to ship 6 million gaming units, to retailers between the still-unknown launch date and financial quarter end March 31, 2007. That should definitely be around 2 to 3 million gaming units ready for shipping a few months from now. And 2 to 3 more million ready to ship separately between the months of late January and March, reaching it's initial goal date perfectly. That's just my estimation though.

Lmao, I dunno why but this made me crack up. It just seemed to me like it would be some random guy just yelling it out OH thats 2 million, we can stop making them now.

Anyway >.>

Logically Nintendo should be able to produce more consoles than Sony by their respective launch dates, just because of cost and efficiency of the process. I think Sony will be able to meet 2 million, but I believe Nintendo should reach 3-3.5 by launch.

^ You serious? I think they'd stop at a high threshold than that. I mean, you'd think they would have learned from their situation with the DS, ya know?

i quite confident to say that Nintendo will have the top of the hill in this generation. The only thing Sony and Microsoft would be able to do in order to join Nintendo is to create a motion sensor for the controllers and game console. I honestly thing that all 3 systems will be close to even numbers after 2 years in sold systems. The Wii is going to be the most fun of them all. The Nintendo DS has proven to me that Nintendo has a lot more to give. If u guys havent even played the DS, then omg u dont know what the fuck u are missing. It got me playing it everywhere i go. SURPRISINGLY IT'S GOT MY MOM, WHOSE NEVER PLAYED A VIDEO GAME SINCE SNES, VERY HOOKED i've never seen my mom into a game EVER!!!!!! She was having fun touching the screen with the stylus pen. It was a very interesting 1 hour moment (yes she played it for a while, even in the car O.o.. she's gonna need to buy her 'own' DS lol).

Now if the DS can get my mom attatched, then imagine what a Nintendo Wii will do. :oh I think Nintendo has found a way to unite gamers and non gamers together to just have fun.

*PS*
New Super Mario Bros. has a mini game where u can blow into the mic in order for action to take place. Nintendo Wii has a mic, what do u think Nintendo will do? *duh*

People are learning from their mistakes with the 360 though. Most stores won't take reservations for the Wii or the PS3.

As far as selling out, both will be hard to find for a long time.

Generally speaking, if you appeal to Nongamers, you win the battle. Just look at the DS sales in Japan, it is so high and it continues to gain massive momentum. Do you think the DS sales are because hardcore gamers want the console? Nope, it is because grannies, kids, and moms and dads want to buy the console. How you can't see the big deal is beyond me. The majority will always determine the winner in the video gaming industry. Basically, your opinion is about as important as me quoting it when it comes to domination over this specific industry, no offense of course. :amuse
