Hello, I am relatively new to this board.

I have only learned one year of Russian, but if anyone wants to learn a little I will to my best to help.

Just want to know if anyone is interested.
Though I have been on one other board BBS.Stardestroyer.net (I am not that new to web boards though still a learner aka less then 1 year)

I admit that I am not very good, but I will try to help you if I can. What exactly would you like to know since my vocab is slightly limited and I still need to install Russian text support.

I can however read Russian letters, meanings come later.

A good place to start when learning the Russian Language (Русский язык) is learning the Russian Alphabet (Русский алфабит) which consists of 33 letters. It will help you greatly when you start to learn the language, it is best to memorise it as you cannot rely all the time on transliteration of Russian.

Here I have written the full alphabet and what the Latin equivalent is of the letter are.

А а - A
Б б - B
В в - V
Г г - G
Д д - D
Е е - Ye
Ё ё - Yo
Ж ж - Zh
З з - Z
И и - I
Й й - Y
К к - K
Л л - L
М м - M
Н н - N
О о - O
П п - P
Р р - R
С с - S
Т т - T
У у - Oo
ф Ф - F
Х х - Kh
Ц ц - Ts
Ч ч - Ch
Ш ш - Sh
Щ щ - Shch
Ъ ъ - Hard sign (твёрдый знак - Tvyordyi znak) I won't explain the uses for this right now.
Ы ы - Y
Ь ь - Soft sign (мягкий знак - Myagkiy znak) Same for hard sign.
Э э - E
Ю ю - Yu
Я я - Ya

Beware when you see some of the letters that looks like letters from the Latin Alphabet such as H which is actually N and P which is R.

The alphabet itself is actually easy to learn and you would be suprised how well you can read Russian once you know the alphabet. Plus you will find learning Russian more fun!

Well basics as with learning any new language usually starts with greetings and goodbyes, simple questions and answers. Here is a few basics for those who want to get into it.

I will write using cyrillic, however I will provide the transliteration and how to pronnounce it. Although it would be much better that you memorise the alphabet as I said to start with.

Hello- Здраствуйте (zdrastvuitye) ZDRAS-VOO-IT-YE
Hi- Привет (privet) PRI-VYET
Good morning- Доброе утро (dobrae utro) - DOBRO OO-TRO
Good afternoon- Добрый день (dobry den') DOB REE DEN
Good evening- Добрый вечер (dobry vecher) DOB REE VEC HER
Hey lads!- Здорово мужики! (zdarova muzhiki) ZDA-ROVA MU-ZH-EE-KI
Goodbye- До свидания (da svidaniya) DA SVEE-DAN-EEYA
All the best- Всего хоршего (vsevo kharosheva) VSEVO KHA-RO-SHEVA (the kh you need to sound at the back of your throat and it sounds like the German "ch" e.g Bach
Bye- Пока (paka) PAKA
See you tomorrow - До завтра (da zavtra) DA ZAV-TRA
See you next time - До встречи (da vstrechi) DA VST-RE-CHI

Keep practicing that alphabet! Next time you won't get transliteration! :) You will need to be able to read Russian writing.

Sorry about not responding for a while, I got kinda nervous, but first you should really try to learn the alphabet. The easiest way to learn is to simply write the letters out over and over again, several per day, I learn the alphabet in class in the span of one week (trying to imitate this success with Japanese).

Again I am sorry I took a while to respond.

Знать - to know

Я знаю - I know
Ты знаешь - You know (familiar)
Он знает - He knows
Она знает - She knows
Оно знает - It knows
Мы знаем - We know
Вы знаете- You know (polite)
Они знают - They know

If you want to make it negative you simply add "не" after the personal pronoun. So e.g Я не знаю - I don't know

Here is a few more russian words

Очень - Very
B - In
Тоже - Also, too
Где - Where
Мой - My (masculine)
Моя - My (feminine)
Moё - My (neuter)
Tyт - Here
Кто - Who
Что - What
Этo - This

i'm not russian. but i like russian.. that's why i was hoping someone here can teach me the pronounciation of some random words..

Tika_Veilan
08-24-2006, 10:25 AM
Random words? Which ones? :)

As far as I know, every foreigner learns how to swear first. :laugh

Or, the second popular, I love you thingie. If you say it to one person, it will be Я люблю тебя , which sounds like Ya lyublyu tebya [YArd lute BLUEs tea BYAkugan]. Yeah, I couldn`t come up with anything better than Huuga`s eyes. :cry

Anyways.
If you are drunk/in a good mood/just heard Naruto fillers are over and want to express your feelings to the whole world or just a bunch of people or a couple of friends, you should say Я люблю вас (I love you) [YArd lute BLUEs VASt] or Я вас всех люблю (I love you all) [YArd VASt French SITH lute BLUEs].

Good way to remember Я люблю вас is to associate it with Yellow bus. They sound somewhat similar, yeah.

I wrote this post for fun but if anybody wants to learn any more phrases, just ask me. :amuse
