I've seen that passed around pretty frequently. I'd have to go through a difficut unlearning process if that were fake. Try to find a website for Super Otaku magazine. One should exist for a magazine that supposedly has near 300 issues (or there should be at least a Wikipedia article on it or something) However, mysetriously, there's nothing.
Try to find an image of a cover of one of the issues of the magazine. For a magazine with near 300 issues, this should be easy. However, mysteriously, there aren't any.
Explain why a Japanese magazine would be called Super Otaku magazine, when that name would be offensive to the people who they target and thus make them less likely too buy it.
Explain how there are mysteriously no actual scans of the interview, and just that blob of text.
Sorry, it's just some stupid interview that some DBZ-tard made up somewhere down the line (to get people to believe that Goku can move at the speed of light, since there's no actual evidence of this in the magna. Judging by how many people actuallly believe that the interview is valid... they seem to have succeded).
Until someone provides a scan of the cover of that magazine, both the interview and Super Otaku Magazine itself don't exist.
Also, since this interview thing is causing us to go off-topic here, if you want to disucss it farther, than please go here (http://forums.narutofan.com/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=118642).
ah well if it is fake then it is... but still Toriyama did bring up those points at some point didn't he? I'm pretty confident that he did. I'm just not sure where.

I find it funny that Arlong's name is written in Japanese exactly the same way as Auron from FFX's name.

Crap. Nothing beats Miura's style... :P
Eventhough I like Miura's art I prefer Hiroaki Samura of Blade of the Immortal and Takehiko Inoue of Vagabond/Real/Slam Dunk over Miura's art.
His still great though. :amuse
The mangaka dug his own grave by starting such a long standing manga like HxH. This is the same guy who got tired of writing Yu Yu Hakusho so he just gave it some half assed ending. Now he has an illness, yet his wife knows everything about the series and is the mangaka who did Sailor moon. She could finish it up for him but imagine how thrilled you'd be to do something like that. If you haven't started reading HxH then I, personally wouldn't recommend it since I think it will have a sloppy ending which will ruin the entire thing.
lol it would be great if the Sailor Moon manga-ka really continued HXH herserlf. Who wouldn't love to see the characters do transformation sequence and end up with them wearing those Sailor clothes that Sailor Moon wore. :nuts

I don't see how I could expect flashy battles out of something that has to do with a guy killing people with a notebook... Meh...everything tends to be slow in the beginning, but when you read on a little further, it gets better. There's alot of suspense in it and like how everything revolves around Kira's plan to change the world. It's an interesting tale to read and L and Light are two of the most clever char. A lot of anime generally run some sort of classical piece of music. One Piece has used Dvorak's New World Symphony and Chopin's Etude in E minor I believe the piece was.
As for Death Note, L is my newest favorite character of all time. Light is one huge bastard, and that's why I love this series so much.

It has the original full OP and ED's, the voices are extremely good, they keep japenese words that wouldn't be necessary to change, and there's little to no edits. It's a damn near perfect dub, at the least the best one I've seen in a while.

Why dose there have to be such a rivalry between Naruto and One Piece?
First of all, I'm going to say that I like both series equally. Both have great qualities and minor flaws.
In defence of Naruto fans:
I've noticed a large number of One Piece fanboys/girls running around on various forums (not just Narutofan) saying that Naruto sucks and One Piece is so much better. I know its a matter of opinion but it leads to flame wars and a fanbase rivalry.
I'm not saying its the fault of One Piece fans. I have seen Naruto fans that are just as bad, but its the agressive One Piece fans that I have been seeing the most. I know the fanbase has been through alot; with the 4Kids dub and all, but thats no excuse to attack the Naruto fanbase.
In defence of One Piece fans:
Alot of the Naruto fans seem to be ignorant of other anime/manga series and think that Naruto is the best thing out there without even watching/reading other great series such as One Piece or Bleach. Naruto fans tend to be more judgemental and may look over another series just beacuse how it looks.
I know this because I used to be that way. But I know now that there are alot of good series out there. One Piece in my opinion is JUST AS GOOD as Naruto.
Conclusion:
I am sick of all the rivalry. If you don't like one series thats fine, just don't go around saying "OMG Naruto sux!" or "lol One Piece is gay!". People need to stop looking for the bad things in an anime and start looking for the good things. Don't be so biased.
Also, the reason I posted this in the One Piece section is because I know all of you have seen most of Naruto and One Piece. Where as alot of people in the Naruto section just stick to... Naruto. :/
aznwolfstein
09-11-2006, 11:34 PM
There's rivalry because people have opinions, and they differ...
I'm not a big peruser of forums but I really don't see that many 'One Piece sucks' or 'Naruto sucks' threads. At least here, unless it's in battledome, each forum dedicated to each manga is mostly just praise for their respective mangas.
Masaki

Well, it's hard for me to describe.
- It's hard not to. It's a discussion board, and I need something to discuss.
- OP was always on the short end of the stick, but many who read both prefer it anyway.
- A lot of Narutards can get on one's nerves if they keep going around saying Naruto's the greatest. If they see something better, it'll open their eyes a bit.

Meh maybe One Piece fans feel the need to be more elitist... I mean look at the crap most other fandoms put us through. The Naruto fandom being the main one.
I've seen up to episode 204 of OP (downloaded ep. 205 yesterday, gonna watch it when I get home:grin) but I still feel that Naruto is better. I'm not saying that OP is bad though (then why would I bother watching over 200 eps?) but I tend to like Naruto better. I guess it's all just a matter of taste:grin
One thing I like better about Naruto that has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the actual series is that the Naruto fansubs are just better. There are several Kaizoku fansubs translations that just don't make any sense. Having Luffy cuss all the time is extremely out of character for him. And I fucking hate how Kaizoku will choose random words not to translate. Especially Yoshi, which they then misspell as "Yosh". I just have to look away from the screen every time I see that. Call it OCD or something. If I ever get to a point where they stop translating other common words like "nani" or whatever, I'm just gonna stop watching One Piece altogether.
escamoh
09-12-2006, 07:02 PM
Doesn't Yosh mean Alright?
Pretty much. Yoshi is basically just an exclamation meaning "all right!", "okay!" etc. It's just annoying that not only do they not bother translating it, which, as translators, they're supposed to be doing, but they misspell it as well.

I've seen up to episode 204 of OP (downloaded ep. 205 yesterday, gonna watch it when I get home:grin) but I still feel that Naruto is better.
I wouldn't stop watching an entire series just because a few common words almost everyone knows isn't translated. ^_^

I love Naruto and One Piece (and Bleach too) equally. My reason for posting was to say that I think its really sad how there is a rivalry between the fanbases of such great series. Yet over looking those elitests, I see that there are also alot of people who agree with me. Its reassuring.
In the mean time, I will be playing Battle Stadium DON (the Naruto vs One Piece vs Dragonball fighting game). :P

I read somewhere that One Piece pretty much redefined "nakama" in Japan, that may be bullshit. And because it's usually a pretty vague word with multiple definitions, I guess it's easier than to translate it.

I actually think its cool, it helps you learn some words along the way. Nakama sounds better anyways
It's still just stupid. Unless it's meant to be in a different language, like Sanji's attacks, then translate it. Don't pick random words to not translate just because it "sounds cool".

I wouldn't call Nakama a random word. It's one of the most important theme's of the story.
Now, things like Baka, I don't care if they change it or not. Doesn't really matter. Most people know what it means anyway.

K-F already explained why they don't translate nakama. It's too much of a strong word that doesn't have an accurate enough translation into English.
Our translation note explaining the term was in Episode 38.
Basically, we were not happy with any english translation of "nakama".
"Friend" is far too weak a word, as Luffy refers to Coby as his "friend" but entirely distinct from his "nakama". "Crewmate" is also too weak.
"Comrade" is an appropriate translation in many cases, but not for One Piece. And stretching it a little more, "mate" may also fit. But we found their use to be awkward in sentences, giving misleading meanings. And also, our subs are geared toward American English, for better or for worse.
It's not that English lacks the same concept. Most people who have competed at a serious level in sports, pledged a fraternity, or joined the Marines probably have a very good idea of what it means. Your frat brother is not simply your "friend"; he is much more. Similarly, when you operate in teams you must trust the other members while holding yourself accountable to them.
So, when it came down to what Luffy should yell after defeating Arlong, we went with we thought sounded best...
"Nami, you are my nakama!"
And now you know the reason behind the One Piece song "Family".
Hitotsumami
09-14-2006, 05:49 PM
Heheheh, I agree with K-F. ^_^
"Nami, you are my nakama!" sounded just as bad as every other time they've used "nakama" instead of translating it.
Broleta
09-14-2006, 06:27 PM
To me it sounded much, much better than say "NAMI YOU ARE MY FRIEND" which wasn't fitting of the situation. Comrade etc wouldn't have worked, either. I actually prefer them leaving nakama untranslated since it's one of the show's main themes, which is making nakama, not friends, not comrades, etc etc.
KuwabaraTheMan
09-14-2006, 06:34 PM
Comrade fits perfectly. Yes Friend doesn't really work, but Comrade does. Its not like Nakama is the holy term above all others that is the foundation for 50 Japanese religions.

I don't think comrade fits alot of the time. As for Naruto and Bleach, nakama isn't really key to the story in those series' or at least as much as it is in One Piece.
Just because a word is used a lot doesn't mean it has to go untranslated.
And I know I've mentioned this before, but I'm just really getting tired of them having characters like Luffy and Usopp uncharacteristically cuss so much. Luffy saying "I'm gonna kick your ass" all the freaking time is just retarded.
Hitotsumami
09-14-2006, 06:53 PM
Yeah. Doesn't Luffy most of the time say "I'm going to send you flying!!"
Eh, in Kaizoku fansubs he always says "kick your ass/kick his ass/kick their asses". What he actually says is "buttobasu" (or something similar, I can't remember the exact spelling) which could just as easily mean "beat you up" or "destroy you". Translating it as Luffy saying "kick your ass", especially when he's smiling and cheerful when he says it, is just stupid and out of character.
In fact, overtranslating to make characters cuss more often seems to be a running theme in Kaizoku's subs, not just with Luffy. I remember some of the DBZ subs back in the 90s doing this, which led to downright comical results (ie Vegeta saying "candy-assed faggot").
Hitotsumami
09-14-2006, 07:16 PM
I like the translation both ways.
When Luffy talks to Vivi about Crocodile, it should be translated into "I'll send him flying" since he's basically smiling.
If Luffy's in the middle of a sersious fight "I'm going to kick your ass," would work.
This is my opinion.

Kaizoku Fansubs sucks? Whoa man, that's a little rough, they've done a really good job on OP, and it's only natural to find people that don't like the way the subbers do it, I think it's fine. I'm actually really glad they did the Nakama switch, there is no english word for it so it's good. I like the word baka, so, why not use it.
Not translating techniques gives a more authentic One Piece experience I think, (though they do translate all the techniques, usually in a faint font with brackets around it at the opposite part of the screen, unless it's an english word). I mean, I just wouldn't want them to have the words "Rubber Rubber Pistol" or "Neck Kick" for attacks in plain white font at the bottom of the screen.
K-F are my favourite fansubbers, if you don't like them say so, but don't use such a strong word on people that work to bring you something to enjoy for free.

There is a translation for Nakama. It's "Friend" "Comrade" "Crewmate".
Words for "Friend" in japanese:
kaonajimi, kouyuu, chijin, yuujin, tomodachi, or guu
Words for "Comrade" in japanese:
tomogara, ryouyuu, doushi, or douhai
Words for "Crewmate" in japanese:

What I mean is that there is no DIRECT translation of the word Nakama into english, only words "like" it.

well it looks like im really late to this conversation. ummmm im on the current of both and they are both really good. for some weird reason i hate talking about flaws in animes i enjoy so all im going to say that one piece is more vast and open than naruto but i think naruto is more to the point. one piece hasnt really made me feel sad in any episode 1-276. they were sad moments but it wasnt sad in comparison to narutos moments because in narutos sad moments i can relate to those things in real life situations. the thing one piece has over naruto is the large variety of characters, places, and things to do. they are both really equal but im just going to have to go with naruto. everyone has thier opinions.
I don't see how anyone can relate to situations that go on n fictional series in real life. I don't really relate with the characters of either series but I feel more for the One Piece characters because it seems their pasts and their hardships are more significant than continuous Mediocre Shinji-like angst.

Well, you can. Being on various sports teams can really make me relate to the members of the Mugiwara Crew, etc.
And some people can empathize with Rock Lee's talentlessness and envy for naturally-gifted peers.
Empathy is a really strong way of making likable, identifiable characters.
Amatsu
09-16-2006, 02:49 AM
Meh I guess I don't really feel empathy then.
I just feel the One Piece characters angst has a lot more depth and purpose than any Naruto character's angst but that's just my opinion. After all if a person would hate Sasuke instead of sympathise with him despite his past doesn't that say a lot about how empathetic some Naruto characters are?
As far as Rock Lee goes I never really felt like I was in his shoes so I never found a reason to sympathise with him.

lol no way. Obviously Naruto would use his NaruMeHaMeHa since that's probably gonna be his little upgrade to Rasengan. XD
Heh, one new rumor was "Rainbowsengan" because the Rasengan in Naruto's hand in the anime opening is all rainbow-colored.

Yeah... the "seven-color chakra" ._.
They built some kind of generator that would convert solar energy into chakra... or something. I dunno, they didn't really explain. But when Naruto did Rasengan there, it boosted his power and made it all rainbowy. But it didn't actually enhance its effects, so I don't know what the point was.

Well imma say this, Naruto shit all over One piece. I aint no One Piece hater.
I actually think that doing a Pirate based manga is oneof the most clever idea a mangaka had in years
I aint going to shit on the arts. I like them,Oda as a style of his own, i respect it.
I dont know, i think that the One piece Arcs are really similar, deal with the same themes, end the same way, express the same emotions ect.
I think that, the fight always look the same. They are cool, word up, but i mean, its always presented the same way. 1-1, against opponents of similar skills. Nartuo fights are like, so much original and they have some dept. Their is a battle system that generate some type of interest and deal with the intellect of the reader. Not the case in One Piece
Akatsuki so far, are the greatest vilain i saw in recent mangas. Yeah One piece, if one day shows us the real super pirates and commanders of the army would probably equal Naruto but.....i mean we dealt with some weird dude in the Water 7 arc.....(...a giraffe for fuck sakes.)
Ahh One Piece need to get to point of the main story. Enough of these, lets search for another crew member Arc. Its getting long. 43+volume.
Im getting worried that One piece will end in a hurry.
The emotional stories of the characters never ever interested me. Its not as boring as bleach but i dont know....
anyways those 3 manga sucks equaly in that departement...
I do not think One piece is better than naruto. Naruto still got that originality that makes me think it got the edge, but One piece is still a great shonen in my book!

Memory arc got points because it was really interesting watching the characters revert to type and also there didn't need to be a manufactured villians with uber strength that would mystically appear to compete with the hero's and then stomp on continuity like an angry child.

One Piece fights I think its quite original.. What makes you think Naruto fight is original?? Its still a ninja fight?? 1 vs. 1.. Naruto, from the start was never original.. If you have followed HxH... you CAN REALLY SEE the similarity, starting from the Chuunin Test, Sharingan, Sasuke getting all avengeful, and stuffs more..
In the defense of OP, all shounen fights are THAT WAY.. 1 vs. 1... however.. OP sometimes varies it a little.. remember Skypiea arc.. Enel did a Battle ROyale.. and he predicts that the remaining people thats gonna survive through is 5 people.. and then all of them goes against him.. thats 5 VS 1...
and then in the current arcs.. switching battles.. isn't that varied?? how could you say its always 1 vs. 1...

Yeah, the One Piece fights can be a bit predictable, but they work within the match-ups. Luffy's fights are never boring; I skipped most of Valley of the End.
OP Fillers > Naruto Fillers, but that's a bit of a cheap victory. It's like kicking an ugly rabid puppy. Yeah, you won, but what's the point?
Akatsuki... yeah, I have to agree that they're pretty decent as villains. But if they weren't as omgbishie, they wouldn't be HALF as popular. Look at the amount of Kakuzu or Kisame fans as opposed to Hidan or Itachi. And they do more standing around and looking pretty than actually demonstrating their badassery.

Well i mean, i couldnt follow HxH because, i actually tried, and the dialogues made me bored....and the arts...lets not even talk about them. But in the world if shounen, everything as took from Saint Seiya, kenshiro no Ken and Dragon Ball. The presentation ect.
But their is often fights that deal with many peoples at the same times, the recent ones mostly. The 3 legendary ninjas fight, Saori vs chiyo and Sakura, Orochimaru Vs everybody, Hidan Vs Team Asuma and Mr shikamaru.
I think that the opponents are original, but i would like to see Zoro not fighting a sword based opponent for once. But like i said, im not hating the fights. Gear 2 was the shit.
i just think naruto got that edge.

09-20-2006, 06:45 AM
Well.. I cannot force you to like the fights that been set up that way..
But remember Zoro's dream?? His dream is to become the best swordman in the world.. that is why, a fight with the best swordmen another pirate/marine crew has is a must for him..
Aside from Luffy, all the others are actually quite random I must say..
As for Naruto, the fights are not set up because all they have been through was like... exams.. which are basically a random draw.. and all the others are like unknown stats people.. which means that.. we don't know the style of the opponents fights..
As for OP.. we already know the basic set up.. Captain vs. Captain, Swordman vs. Swordman.. etc.. but the interesting thing is how Oda varies these similar set-up fights..

Oh yeah, forgot.
Okay, I've just finished the first 130 episodes. My one complaint is that a lot of Zoro's fights are basically plot no jutsu. Mainly Mihawk and Mr. 1.
Mihawk: No matter how strong you are, you can not hold back 3 swords with a fucking knife.
Mr. 1: So Zoro can all of a sudden cut through steel because he can "hear" it? WTF?
All of Luffy's fights have been pretty much the same too, except for the two that he lost to Crocodile: Luffy takes a beating from enemy to the point where it looks like he's about to lose, when suddenly he uses a brand new attack that completely overwhelms and defeats his opponent. Looking ahead at the Lucci fight, this formula doesn't seem to have changed much.

I can back up both of Zoro's fights you mentioned:
Mihawk: The dude's the one of the strongest motherfuckers in the series. Plus, he's one of the 7 warlords of the Grand Line. I'm pretty sure beating a 19 year old who hasn't even been to the GL is no sweat.
Mr. 1: Way before he even heard of Mr. 1, he purchased 2 swords that CAN cut through steel. Add the fact that Zoro's pretty damn strong himself, and VOILA, he can cut steel.
Sure, Mihawk's strong, but from the way the fight went it looked like Zoro wasn't even trying. All he did was attack Mihawk in the same place over at over with like one sword at a time.
As for Mr. 1, pretty much the whole plot of that fight was that Zoro couldn't cut through steel until he could "hear" the steel, and then he could cut through it. Sounds like bullshit to me.
Tsuuga
09-21-2006, 11:02 AM
It's not that he can "hear" it. Well, kind of. It's kind of Oda's take on ki. Ki is, basically, the breath of all things. When Zoro said he was on death's edge, he said he could hear the breathing of the objects around him. And hence, he knew he could cut them by cutting that breath or by attacking the ki itself, by channeling his own ki into his sword.
But yeah, it's all bullshit, whether it's Chi, Ki, Chakra, Reiatsu, or the Force. But it's fiction. You have to suspend your disbelief, otherwise everything smells like bullshit.

Zoro WAS trying...
He was just shit compared to Mihawk...
Think about it, he isn't just any enemy, he's the BEST and STRONGEST swordsman in the OP world.
Its only natural for Zoro to look like a total n00b compared to him, its like that with everything.
