ok so i dont know japanese all that well, but if u can afford it i suggest getting the rosetta stone program for japanese. It is a really good program. Im using it. It's about $125 dollars but it is really worth it. They have 2 programs, japanese 1 and japanese 2. i have 1 and 2. but if u cant afford it then i'll help out if i can to teach u some, very little japanese.
Here are some nouns:
otokonoko-little boy
onnanoko-little girl
inu-dog
neko-cat
Hikooki(i think that's the right spelling)-airplane
kuruma-car
well that's a start for knowing japanese.basic nouns.

otokonoko and onnanoko is actually 2 words and a particle (の[no])
"otoko" and "onna" litterally mean "male" and "female," respectively
no is the nominal/possesion particle and it shows relationships between linked nouns
ko means child. (This is also a common suffix on names, especially girls, and ends with the character 子, meaning "child.")
Also, the correct spelling for aeroplane (airplane) is "hikouki."
In kanji/hiragana (respectively) of the list you mentioned.
男の子 / おとこのこ otokonoko
女の子 / おんなのこ onnanoko
犬 / いぬ inu
猫 / ねこ neko
飛行機 / ひこうき Hikouki
車 / くるま kuruma
Also in the same "otoko no"/"onna no" patern you can say for man/woman. However I don't suggest using these words much.
男の人 / おとこのひと - otoko no hito
女の人 / おんなのひと - onna no hito
You can change the hito to kata if you want to make it more polite. The kanji stays the same, but the reading/hiragana changes
おとこのかた - otoko no kata
おんなのかた - onna no kata

sorry to double post, but....
Ask any words or phrases and Yoshitsune, Katsuki, I, or someone else will translate for you.
For actually learning grammar itself, I'll send you the site that I recommend every "newbie" to:
www.guidetojapanese.com
It starts you off right with hiragana and kanji, it has a feature where you can hover the mouse over words to see the definition, but it doesn't get you "hooked" on the evils of romaji. :amuse It doesn't teach you how to say if this is what you want to say in English, here's how to say it in Japanese....nope it right off the bat, tells you if that's how you're learning, then you should quit. This guide has a few rough spots in there, but it's just straight grammar.
Also you will come across the verb naru being termed as "to become" it really is a verb referring to something that was once one state and now is another.
The books commonly tell you that your 3 to-be verbs in Japanese are arimasu, imasu, and desu. However that's wrong, not considering the fact that Japanese sentences don't have subjects nor to-be verbs, but if you wanted to call something the to-be verb it would be "aru" "iru" and "naru" (desu is just a contraction of "de arimasu" where arimasu is the polite form of aru.)
Anyway, just go to the site and read the guide. It's very long, very detailed. I Printed it out as a refrence guide. Lucky i have a laser printer, it ended up being 237 pages.
it also teaches you dictionary form before polite form, unlike most books.
Dictionary form is also called the plain present form.
Ex.
Dictionary form - 食べる (taberu) - to eat
Polite Present form - 食べます (tabemasu) - to eat
