Bleached Out Magazine Project

The thread title as well as the name of this project is PROVISORY. Nothing is up and going yet but we need at least a title to give this unborn baby a shape. Thanks for understanding.

Okay, boys and girls!

The thread title says it, me and Mori had this planning since long (yeah, we are buys men, if we could make money from our ideas, we'd be rich now) and since I finished my Inner Hollow Project now, it's time to start something new.

Good, the idea isn't really new, some of you might know about the Shinobi Magazine Project in the Naruto-section. And Bleach offers opportunities to talk and write about everday-things for our generation, be it music, clothes and of course the awesome Bleach-verse which is undoubtly connected to the previous mentionned things.

Anyway, to the point: Mori and me, we can't pull this one alone this time. This is why we are looking for staff.

We need gifted and trained people with the following skills:

- creative heads (being a Bleach-fan is a MUST)
- editors and typesetters
- colourists
- fan-artists (since we can't always use pics from the manga, anime or colour spreads)



Mori and me both are known to be able to colour but we would always like to have someone to support us and with whom we can exchange ideas not only about colourings, edits and type-settings but about the general magazine.

If YOU are interrested and think you can help us, simply post in this thread or send me or Moridin a PM. We'd like to hear from you cause we really need some more helpful hands to make this thing decent. :)

Artists are probably one of the biggest things needed as neither of us have any particular drawing skill...so anyone with any artistic talent who;s interested in signing up, please do!

Creative heads, as the name says, are the drive behind the project, for a magazine we need a constant supply of good ideas for topics, designs, possible interviews with whatever character and new sections within the magazine. It isn't an easy job but it's not like you'll work on this alone. The creative heads always stay in contact with the other staff members to discuss things and gather opinions so we have a steady flow of ideas and brainstorming going and then we'll decide together on what we are doing. :)

As for editor, I don't know about your editting skills with programms but you sure write great essays, being a creative head shouldn't be much of a problem for you either, I guess. :P

I'd like to be an Editor/Typesetter. I've been a typesetter for Shannaro! since the beginning about over a year ago, and have been off-and-on working for them. I love this idea, both the Naruto one and this Bleach one, and would appreciate it if I could work on it as well. I would suggest that the first thing we do is to come up with some potential names for the project as shinigami is a provisional/temporary name for now.

We thought about having a few regular topics and sections that will be always in the magazine, among them a cooking/householding section. We didn't fully agree on the name yet, but "Tessai's Wok" was among the favorites.

Mori and me seriously have to discuss some things this weekend, hopefully we can agree on some stuff so we can present first few plans for all to see how this mag will be developed.

Also, i had an idea... the issue number on the cover should be in kanji surrounded by the gotei 13 insignia.. to somewhat emulate the thing on the back of the captains cloaks... just a thought

Out of what i submitted i liked the style of Bleached Out and Souls more... bleached out for the simplistics look, souls for the stylistic brush stroke look...

Once a name is chosen i can do my best on making the logo, vectoring and stuff to avoid sligh distortion and such... whatever the case, after the name is decided, ill get to work making some final logo designs and submit them to you guys :laugh

Also, Splash is a cool name but doesn't fit imo. It's not Bleach-related enough.

Personally, I'd go for Bleached Out with the respective layout. Maybe we can both combine the layout from Bleached Out with the one from Souls?

eh its the truth... in actuality ive never worked on a prohect liek this before.,.. all of my work have before been for me only so i thought this would be a very fun experience for me and it has...

so everyone just look at my submissions and speak hoinestly... throw out suggestions as well... it will most definately help :laugh

Aslo, the faster we get passed the name bit... the faster we can work on the meat of the projest, with articles and fan arts... itll be loads of fun

Feedback, eh?

First one:

I like it. It's neat and professional looking, but it looks just a little cramped when I compare it to the original El Alma design.

Second one:

I like this version better than the original. The first one was a little too bare. Inverting the colors fixed that magnificently. Also, it plays off the idea of bleaching something out better with white on red.

Third one:

I don't really like it all that much. I think it might be the black.

Fourth one:

I don't like that one either. It looks too forced.

Fifth one:

A nice way to play with ideas, but it's too busy. And since there are almost no definitive edges, your eye gets too carried away with the white to really be able to concentrate on it. My eye keeps going back to the left side in particular.

My favorites are the first and second ones. :)

For most of last school year I was surrounded by graphic designers, illustrators, fine artists, and photographers. Plus there were almost weekly critiques on whatever projects we were working on.

Money, looks like y'all like Bleached Out. I'm glad y'all liked the name I randomly made up. ^^

Hmmm... tbh, the last one does look the best out of all of them, but the color choice isn't exactly the best. You might want to go with all black, or... make the words Bleach stand out more, especially since this is a Bleach magazine. I have an idea of how it could look like too, but I'll work on it as soon as I'm done with the Shinobi issue this month.

I'm glad I wasn't too harsh. :) I always worry about that with critiques. You should think about graphic design. :laugh I know it's hard to do, but from what I've seen, you have a knack for it.

I took graphic design for two year and just finished like a few weeks ago... I actually did nothing in those classes, and we were supposed to work three hours a week on our projects... i started mine a week before the deadline which was about a few weeks ago... i got a 93 out of 95 (i was deducted for overall presentation, i was considering i would pass at all as i was stilll writing out some of it by hand onto paper on the bus ride to school)... so yeah, i may have a knack at it... and thankfully, im really interested in this so ill work at it consistently :laugh

Also, nah, you werent at all harsh on my work... i had those same feelings... i can trash my own work but its hard for me to find any ways to improve so others looking at my work subjectively is a really big help :nod

I used the darker red in an earlier one and it looked good, didnt think to change it... but ill see what i can do about giving some colour varients so you can choose what seems better... i wanted a more darker colour to contrast white... with logos its best to go with limited colours.... one colour, a contrasting colour and possibly some tranparency.... ill see what i can do, whip up some sample then... when its finalised, ill see to getting it done in super fine detail and high def so it will look good nomatter what size we use it for

Well, heres what i think are improvements i have to make...
El Alma style: i dont know, i think its the longer words used in this that makes it look not as good as the original el alma... ill play around with proportions on that
Neo 1: ill see about a colour change.. something more darker and a cool colour may be good for making the bleach stand out more
Neo 2: the out definately need to be changed in colour, its sort of hard to see at the moment
Neo 3: Im not reall feeling this one... a little too bland, i may scrap the idea... theres just nothing going on is there, its just some words
Neo 4: need to make the word stand out more and busy it down i think... perhaps if i gradiented the letering towards the point that it touches the side, you can just get a nice outline...

But I thought around giving th first issue around 30 pages, but a max of 37 or 38, so we get the approximate size of two manga chapters. Just so you have some orientation. If we start packing the issues to much, we won't have enough material for the next month. Maybe we will have less than 30 pages, that's something we'll see about in the creation process.

Now, for the topic of the first issue.
I thougth we might try out something people from both the manga and anime might be interested in without going into the actual storyline to much. That's why I tought for our cover story we could pick a comparison/battle of the two main bad guys we currently have to deal with in the Bleach storylines.

Cover-story: "Charisma Gods! Aizen VS Kariya!?"

The cover would be two close-ups of Aizen (the bishi-version without glasses) and Kariya, both in some cool, charismatic poses.

This will be the main work for the fanartists. Take a few looks at the manga for the way Aizen usually sits on his throwne, his facial expression, and so on. Same goes for Kariya, you might actually have to look for screenshots if you don't watch the fillers. I know this won't be easy but I trust our awesome artists to work some designs out, first.

Please remember: Only the line-art is important for now! No unnecessary shading and no colouring! That's something we will do in the next step. Also, contact each other, work together. Not every artist has to do his little bits on his own, you can help each other if possible.

That is the main thing, the interview/battle/comparison between those two will have to be worked out, but that's not so difficult if we have some cool looking layouts first.

The rest I'd like to have included in the mag:

- Taichou's interview with Ichimaru Gin (we might need some Gin-fanart or doodles for the background of the page, most of it will be the interview-text, though)

- Tessai's WOK (this is one of the many sections we might and will include in the mag. I doubt we will be able to always fit all of them in, but this time, Tessai's WOK will be definitely in it. It will include some tips revolving around householding stuff, cooking, etc.) Again, here we will probably need some fanart of Tessai in some funny show-off poses with a frypan in his hand or whatever you can come up with. XD

- SS-guide (this one will be crucial, mainly for the creative heads. We hardly know any facts about the 80 areas of Rukongai, so a lot of stuff will have to be made up in - for Bleach Universe standarts - the most plausible way. This will require some work and will probably the most difficult part for the first issue to come up with. Use your fantasy, get in contact with me, with your "collegues" and with other Bleach readers. Present and characterize one or two of the 80 areas you chose. Landscape. Climate. Living conditions, people. Size. Anything.)

The get along with your zanpaktou thingy is definitely a good idea.

Also, the stuff you had in mind for the rukongai/ss-guide is nice, though I don't know if this should be another Kenpachi-section thingy cause he already has one. We could also have this one for Yamamoto, since he's basically the oldest guy around and knows the most about SS.

I'm in the process of working on the lineart for the cover. I've got as far as what I want the layout to be. I'm at work and I just did a draft for Aizen, and it turned out awesome (well...as awesome as it can when I'm drawing on a piece of paper less than two inches wide and in red pen), and then I tried Kariya and it kind of sucked. I blame his hair.

I'll see if I can get it right and post a draft when I get home. If the draft is approved, I'll start on making it clean and shiny and full of lines.

Your zanpaku-to and you

By hissatsu

When trying to build a strong and lasting relationship with your zanpaku-to you must remember many things.

1). Your zanpaku-to may be in the form of a sword, but it is a living extension of your spirit and even your very self.

2).Your zanpaku-to has feelings and it’s mood affects it’s physical manifestation

3). Just because you’ve learned the name of you’re zanpaku-to doesn’t mean you know anything about it, in a metaphorical since, “If you ask the name of some person in front of you, does that person instantly become your friend”, no you must communicate.

Now for some readers, you’ll find sitting and talking with your zanpaku-to infuriating, but you must remember at the core, your zanpaku-to manifests it’s personality from you. Also to take into consideration is the inner sanction of the zanpaku-to, Your soul. This miniature world is unique to you and is where your zanpaku-to resides, this world is influenced by your emotional condition, this may also affect the mood of your zanpaku-to as well.

Now, when the barrier of is broken between you and your zanpaku-to, you begin to learn more from it, grow stronger. It is crucial to remember that your zanpaku-to wish to lend you strength in order to grow stronger, those who believe strongly in gaining strength from training themselves alone are restricting their own zanpaku-to’s abilities. Remembering these things is crucial.

1). Your zanpaku-to’s manifestations are derived from your spiritual pressure’s shape, but that doesn’t mean that once it attains this shape it is restricted to the most obvious form of attack. By communicating with your zanpaku-to you can learn many things from various unseen methods of attack, to weaknesses to it within it’s current form, the possibilities go on.

2). Your zanpaku-to’s strength can be greatly affected by your convictions. Those zanpaku-tos of people who boast of strength and superiority of over others blindly are often flashy and appear refined and powerful, but in battle are flimsy and weak. Those Zanpaku-to’s of people who fight for a cause unwaveringly are often strong and powerful enough to protect the conviction of its wielder.

3). One of the most important factors in battle is controlling your zanpaku-to’s strength, but the power a zanpaku-to is not something that can drawn upon on demand, it’s only given when your zanpaku-to trusts that it will be put to good use.

Finally and most importantly, the relationship between a zanpaku-to and it’s wielder is based upon the principles of trust and friendship. Remember these things and your zanpaku-to will thank you and lend you it’s strength, but not as a tool, but as a partner, a teammate, and a friend.

So in response to my begging, I got this assignment from Yakkun:

I had this idea for Sakura to draw another one of her cute sketches: Tousen is alone in the bathroom in HM and is posing in front of the mirror (ironically) and makes grimmasses and tries to look and speak like Gin, pulling the eyelids back to make foxy eyes and smile. Of course, Gin is secretly watching from behind with a real sinister smile and as Tousen intones "Ikorose Shinsou!" he gets struck
in the back by Gin's sword XD

Anyway, people, the cover-story interview is finished! I'll post it here in all completeness, it is probably full with grammar mistakes, but I think you should understand it perfectly fine. I think I'll split it into two posts.

„Charisma Gods! – Aizen Sousuke VS Kariya Jin!?“


Today the two greatest masterminds known to the Bleach-verse have gathered here around my table and offer me their precious time to answer some questions.

Both of them being charismatic leaders of powerful groups and both of them having high ambitions in order to fulfill their plans which still remain a mystery in the dark, Aizen Sousuke, “The One to stand in the Heavens” and Kariya Jin, “The Eternal Bounto” are two men with extraordinary powers and influence.

Z~K: Gentlemen, thank you very much for sharing your time with the readers.

Aizen: It’s a pleasure.

Kariya: You’re welcome.

Z: Let’s go straight for the first question, one of the most interesting ones for the readers: Are you evil?

A: This is an interesting way of putting it. Of course, by the perception of many, I look like an evil man. Then again, if you want to reach a goal you need to sacrifice something. You can’t gain anything without costs and high ambitions demand great sacrifices.

K: No. It might appear that we Bounto are evil, but to what greater extend? What are few and we can’t reproduce our kind. We are just another endangered species, trying to hold its place in existence. The gathering of living souls is essential for us to strengthen our kind and secure the place we obtained. If there is evil in the world it is to be blamed on the rest of mankind, despising and abandoning us – fellow humans – for our unique powers and abilities. The evil is out there but it is not to be found in the Bounto.

Z: So, you are both trying to justify your deeds because they are measures to protect your goals?

A: It is not that way. I’m not only trying to justify or defend my personal goals. Before long this issue will become a matter to every being in existence. Be it humans, souls, shinigami or hollows. Once these walls that limit each of the species are torn down you will realize that the sacrifices that have been made are a small price for a greater good we all can benefit from. Of course, if you are reaching for the Heavens, those of weak heart and will have to prepare to fall down on the way.

K: This is by no means a mere excuse. I do realize that there are ugly, unsightly things to be done for us. But that is only natural and you would realize if you were in the position of a Bounto. Neither humans nor shinigami nor hollows have ever been in the position of being endangered at a species and were at the verge of being wiped out. This is different with us Bounto, although we are humans as well. If you are fighting to survive you have to consider extreme measures to obtain the power to keep your species alive. The last group that fell victim to their way of living were the Quincy, who – ironically – were a lot like us. They were humans as well and now they are wiped out, at least almost, and all mostly because of their extreme ways in fighting hollows.

Z: Okay, let’s leave it at this first. Another question, which might intrigue many readers is the secret behind your success. Both of you are leading a group of formidable fighters who at least claim to share your outlook on the world. Isn’t it kind of hard for you to keep them in control, sometimes?

A: Admitted, yes it is. Being a leader is always difficult. But I think so far I have done a good job, going by everything has played out yet and despite the odds being against us in the first place. And it’s not like I am alone with this task, I have Gin and Kaname who support me and among my subordinates Ulquiorra is without doubt the one I can rely on anytime. Dealing with rebellion and disorder isn’t as much an issue anymore compared to the past times since we planned out everything a long time ago and made preparations in secret. But I would be a fool to deny it’s presence. As long as I can keep it in check, I don’t worry about it to much.

K: Certainly. It is actually unlikely for a group of Bounto to get along for a longer time since we are loners and our abilities are to different to put them of use as a group. However, I consider my efforts to have fruited so far as I am still the accepted leader.

Z: Yet, aren’t you afraid of a possible betrayal? Kariya-san might be used to it, considering the nature of the Bounto’s way of life...

A: No, not really. Of course, there is always a possibility of betrayal. Soul Society considers me a traitor after all, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is someone in Hueco Mundo who tries to scheme against and sabotage my plans. But among my shinigami fellows, no. Not really. Kaname has his own way of justice but as long as my ambitions go along with his believes, I can trust him and he can trust me. As for Gin, I never considered anyone else but him to be my right hand man. He is my second half and I utterly trust him, not to mention that I am the one who knows him best. Even better than vice-captain Matsumoto.

K: Indeed, I am used to assaults but I don’t consider it betrayal since we are all on our own actually and only work together to accomplish goals of our interest. However, I expect my companions to play along if they want to profit from my efforts. Most of the time it works but we have stubborn or ambitious, if not arrogant fellows around, like Mabashi who is still rather young, lacks experience and therefore is a bit cocky. Utagawa tried to assault me and take over as the leader but he failed, which is prove enough that he isn’t cut out to fulfill our goals.

Z: I understand... however, assuming your leadership consumes a lot of time and requires sacrifices – even personal ones - , is there actually room for friendship? Or relationships with the other sex?

A: There is hardly time for anything besides the work we have to do now. It doesn’t appear that way but there is always something to do. Of course we have our moments where we take it easy and have time to relax or for ordinary conversations of small talk. My relationship to the people I respect and trust hasn’t changed since I left Soul Society. You might call this friendship.

Z: And for the women?

A: I certainly have been admired by women during my time at the fifth division but I never really found the time for a deep relationship. In fact, I probably could learn a thing or two from Gin or Kaname. Also, Hueco Mundo doesn’t exactly offer many attractive Hollows and just guessing which ones could have been female by their mere appearance in Hollow form would be to much work. However, we have at least one female Arrancar but I’m not interested in her sexually nor would that be a way to go with subordinates. So, no relationships for me, yet.

Z: Thank you very much for answering this delicate question, Aizen-san. What about you, Kariya-san?

K: The Bounto are a big clan and just like in every family you have members you get along with quite well and others who you rather avoid or wish they wouldn’t be part of it. Depending on the bonds with those members are stronger and weaker and I can say I have loved Bounto who were complete stranger like they were my own children, especially those who died way to young. Then there are those I can completely trust, and who I see as close as brothers can be. Others are merely friends or only familiar at best. You have those who still need to be shown the way like Mabashi who is headstrong and cocky or even Ichinose, who is a shinigami, and while he is completely trustworthy he still lacks experience and needs to open up a bit.

Z: What about you and Yoshino?

K: If you don’t mind I’d rather leave this question open for interpretation.

Z: Okay, nevermind. Then, let’s come to the next question. Another reason for your popularity besides your powers and charisma might be your vast knowledge due to your age. How do you see each other in those fields?

K: Aizen-san has always been known as one of the most formidable shinigami in Soul Society, a humble and loyal man, powerful, skilled and smart but peaceful and always caring for Soul Society, the Gotei 13 and his subordinates. Being the vice-captain and later on the captain of the fifth division helped him to store vast knowledge and his keen mind always strived to be challenged by new things and the workings behind the essence of the being called “shinigami”. But in the end he just became victim to his power-thirst like many others before him. Knowledge is power, and while respect Aizen-san for his achievements and powers, his motivation is rather simple: He wants everything there is. And he is willing to trample everything in the process. Power is not only a strong temptation but it makes attractive as well. I assume that’s the secret behind his popularity.

A: For a human, Kariya-san is powerful and wise. Having dwelled in the material world for centuries helped him gather knowledge, sharpen his mind and his skills and develop great physical power. While my knowledge and power exceeds his by far, I still envy him for the fact that he could spend his lifetime in the material world while I was more or less stuck at Soul Society, merely a soul – a powerful one, but still a soul – while he had a body made of flesh and could enjoy everything humans can enjoy. Also, while I know that being an outcast among humans is a cruel thing it is by far not as cruel as dying, believing to be brought to a better place and then noticing that it is all the same again, a cold, brutal world (Z: Aizen is obviously talking about SS).
I also take notice of the vast experience Kariya-san has obtained by traveling the world, collecting and uniting his comrades. He saw many cultures, many people, and speaks several languages and is familiar with foreign habits and art. If he weren’t so much consumed by his desire for revenge, he could have an easier life. Actually, a man with his powers and knowledge would be welcome among my men but his objective is disadvantageous and his spirit and motivation unfortunately mislead.
Z: Thanks for sharing your points of view about each other. Very informative! So, is it true that you can speak German among other languages, Kariya-san?

K: Yes.

Z: Can you say something for us?

K: Was möchten Sie denn hören? (trans: What would you like to hear?)

Z: Haha, das war großartig! (trans: Haha, that was great!) Can you sing the German National Anthem?

K: Oh... this was rather random, but... yes, I think I could do it. The melody is very familiar and the text shouldn’t be a problem. But I think I’ll save it for later.

Z: I have one last question, to both of you – who do you consider your closest person or friend and who would you accept as your private student?

A: That would be without doubt Gin. He is the person I trust the most, a friend and my private student at the same time. I consider Kaname to be very close as well, but he is a very strict man, though, very reliable as well. Since he has his own way of justice I can’t really consider him a student, but I definitely see him as a friend and as an advisor as well.

K: I think Claude (Koga) matches this description – a friend - the best. We have been very close to each other from the beginning, I know him inside out and he is a very reliable, loyal comrade. I share his pain and he shares mine. Ichinose is a serious and eager man, who needs to learn patience a bit more but I trust him completely and if he weren’t a shinigami already, he would make for a great Bounto. I praise him as a student, servant and friend. He has his own believes and ideals, similar as to Tousen Kaname is for Aizen-san, and I only hope he can fulfill them without getting into trouble. It would be a pity.

Z~K: Gentlemen, thank you very much for your visit and your time. I appreciate it.

Kariya: Oh, you’re welcome.

Aizen: Not at all. It was a pleasure. If we meet again, next time I’d even show you my zanpaktou...

Z~K: Err... haha, to much of a honor, Aizen-san! Nevermind, I don’t think it’s necessary. ^_^;;;

“Okay, my personal summary is, that both of them are real charismatic monsters with incredible abilities and feats, but Aizen Sousuke might have the advantage of age and cunningness over Kariya Jin who – nonetheless – trumps with his advantage of knowledge in exotic cultures and experience from the material world.

Ive been thinking about it and i think itll be a better idea for the mag to release pages as double spreads instead of singular sheets... its not like they are going to print it and we get the whole magazine feel more being able to see doublespreads... or of course we could release a double spread one and a seperate one with sliced one page images :oh

I see there is a lot more material here to work with now... ill see about looking into layout to the cover story and the zanpakuto guide... ill probably get most of that done in the week or less

DWG I have to disagree with the double spread idea, whilst it might look more 'magazine like' its just extra scrolling that makes it more of a hassle to read. I think we could have a couple of double page spreads for shininess/awesomeness factor but I think it will work better at single page size
