A short description of a long land...
Norway has been an independent state since 1905, but has existed as a country since Harald Hårfagre (or Fairhair) (AD 860-940) assembled the smaller kings and princes under his rule and proclaimed himself king of the Norwegians.
Today, Norway is a constitutional monarchy with one legislative house, where the Chief of State is King Harald V, and the head of government Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
The Norwegian constitution was written in 1814, and is one of the oldest in the world. May 17 is the national holiday and is celebrated with an abundance of flags and children celebrating. Not a show-off of weapons and the military!!!
Though Norway is a quite big country (386,958 km2 total area), there are only 4,5 million inhabitants, with a population density of 13.4 persons per km2 (34.6 persons per square mile). This could be partially explained by the fact that about two-thirds of Norway consists of mountains!
The coastline is no more than 21,925 km in all (13,623 miles) with the fjords and the some 50,000 islands it is one of the most rugged and longest coastlines in world.
The capital is Oslo, with a population of 473,000 people.
