View Full Version : Why I like, and why I don't like One Piece.

(The title doesn't really make sense >.>)
Let me start off by saying, yes, this is an opinion thread, so it may seem sort of pointless, but I don't care. :spaz
Well, I have to admit it has it's moments, I'm not very far and don't download the chapters (Well I have downloaded 'em, but only a few times.), I subscribe to Shounen Jump, It's possible, but very un-likely for that to be the reason I don't like it so much (Different translations, and I've heard they've even cut out a few things, and edited out some other things. )
Anyways, as I said, it has it's moments, and fairly good character development. That's probably why I keep reading it, since Shanks r0x my s0x.
One of the biggest reasons I don't like it so much is because of the (IMO), rather weak plot. Well, not so much the plot, but maybe how the Author ... 'does' the story line. Well, I really don't know if this happens in the original non-edited manga, but at many times, imo it seems.. sort of childish. *Dodges rocks. XD
That's the main reason why I don't like it, and some other things seem just not to fit my personal manga taste (>.>).
What I do like of it however, is Shanks! XD But really, the characters are definitely intriguing, and very original. One of the arcs, where Nami (1st?) 'betrayed' them I found a little excessive (Except for the end, what Luffy kicked ass, that was one of those 'moments' :laugh ). Like the fighting, for example, it just seemed too long imo, and not necessary.
Though, from what I have read so far, it's not one of those manga I'm interested in enough to download further, I might if the story gets better though.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed my rant, and find away to reply to it. :nod

For us to take your criticism seriously, you have to say what your criticising. Its childish. What part? What have you observed as childish? Weak plot you say. How? I dont think Shonen Jump is even in the Grand Line yet, is it? If Shanks is really all you like about, prepare to give up. He only makes one more appearance in the Grand Line. And IMO, the story isnt childish. It's extremely well done, especially the later chapters. Trust me, each story arc is much better than the last. After I read Alabasta, I was like "Wow, that was the shit! It had everything! Awesome story! Awesome new characters! Awesome character development! Vivi went through hell and overcame it! Some of the most brutal fights I've ever seen! What could top this?!" And then I read Skypiea and I was like "HOLY SHIT!" Get it?
(Different translations, and I've heard they've even cut out a few things, and edited out some other things. )
Nope. Not a thing is edited out of the manga.

I say dl the anime instead of the manga. I read the manga and am up to date, but I personally think the anime is alot better.
But I agree with the poster above, be more speciffic please. thats asuming you really want any productive replies from this thread.

There is no specific part I can mention right now, since I don't have the manga here. It may have been the few times I watched the dubbed version, which completely destroyed most of my positive opinion. But, it's probably just the little things that make it childish. Like the art (No I am not dissing the art, it's just not my personal preference, at all.), something the Author does, like Ussop's nose (Yeah, that's a weak point, but it's all I can really think of right now. =X), it just seems pointless and excessive, it makes me feel like he drew him for 10 year olds. Or, probably the biggest reason I think at some times it's childish, is because of the Humor, which I don['t find funny at all.

Nope, and he isn't the only reason I read it, as I've said before, it has it's moments. Also, I'll never stop reading it, since I get the manga every month, and I'm not just going to skip the few One Piece chapters.

Yeah, I shouldn't be judging this manga so much since I havn't read so much, and I'm not up-to-date, I'll continue to read it, sop hopefully my opinion will change.

I don't like the anime that much, imo, for every series I've seen Manga > Aime.

Suzumebachi: The Shonen Jump just reached Laboon, I heard.
Weak plot? Naruto wants to become the greatest Hokage, Luffy wants to become the Pirate King - Shounen serie plot.

Ussops nose looks like that because it's a comedy/adventure/drama/action serie and it reflects his personality. Pinochio ya know?

Good point, it just doesn't interest me as much maybe? The storyline is.. roughly the same as Naruto, but I guess it's still just not my personal preference.

Yeah, but I just don't find it amusing in any way, I understand the relation between him and Pinochio, but I just don't understand why the author would do that, since, imo, it's not funny.

Ah, don't worry. Your sentiments are shared, in a way.
As for the manga being childish, that's the style of the art and the actions of the characters. It's all a little ridiculous and odd at times (Gum Gum: Idiot! :laugh [you'll see later on]) but the high points definately make it worth it.
I won't spoil anything, but when you get to a certain point, there are hints and clues that make you keep going. That's one of the high points. Another is when Luffy saves a crew member and helps them out (a la Zolo (w/e @ spelling] and Nami). That's another. The dynamic between Luffy and Co. is cliched, but great.
The character designs are great. It's like Oda never runs out of ideas for characters. Only flaw is that either women are really fat, or really curvy. Otherwise, great variety is to be found.
This applies to the powers as well. You never know what an enemy might pull out, there's just such great variation in their abilities and how they are applied. It's not the standard "I beat you down using my monsters/fists/powerbeam/robot/sword" stuff. There's powers involving the most odd and mundane and outrageous of powers, that Oda somehow manages to make into a formidable power, and it's always great to watch.
The back story behind characters is great. While not too deep, with each character (with the possible exception of 1 person) has a great back story to them.
Sure, the battles might be a little drawn out. But Oda handles that in a way that they are all awesome, and each fight manages to hold it's own against the other. Oda does a good job of power juggling, almost never underpowering any of thee crewmate, even Nami. Well...Ussop is an exception, I think. His strength lies in tinkering.
As for the art, it's odd...but not bad at all. I got used to it fairly quickly, and I can't imagine One Piece in anyother way. It's this wierd mix between absolutely Animaniacs cartoony and a realism that Death note has. At times everyone seems really human and awesomely drawn, and then hands stretch real far, faces exaggerate, jaws drop, noses break and heal, eyes buldge, the whole gamut. It's wierd, but it works splendidly.
Eh. Down load the manga, and purchase it. That's what I'm doing.
Nami arc am winnar.

Wow, you are exactly the same as how as I was when I first started watching One Piece... the like it/dislike it attitude and the Shanks-worshipping (I thought he was one of the coolest anime characters ever)... which is why you should stick with it. The beginning arcs are a little formulaic, so it's understandable you find them kind of boring, but keep with it, because it gets better, honestly. You're getting to the really good part (and by that I mean the rest of the series).
BTW: The anime is better a lot of the time. The Alabasta arc wouldn't be the same without the music.

Easy why i love it, it has what Naruto tries to have and what Bleach somewhat has. Story, GOOD fight sceans, and FUNNY and the DRAMA is perfect, not to much bullshit and not to little. I think this series is great and i'm only on ep 50 *Still downloading :P* But LUFFY has to be one of the best characters every created. Stright forward, kickass, strong, great set of moves, funny, and stupid. I mean you can't go wrong with this guy. And that's just me prasining one character. It's a great show from it's mature moments to it's sad, funny, stupid, and great moments. I love every minute of it and it easily ranks in my top five, destroying naruto and beating bleach, though Bleach is good too, naruto = blah. So i'm glad ONE Piece turned out to be as great as it is...and i only hear it gets better :)

Usopp's character design is based off Pinocchio or a Tengu. Both were considered big liars and had big nose's. That's why Usopp looks the way he does. Besides you're not supposed to think the art is funny... You're supposed to think Usopp is funny in general, which he is. I mean he can beat anyone with his 8,000 men after all. XD
Not to mention he's the king of sniper island but that's another story.
Did you ignore my previous post? I already said hthat I know I'm not very far, and don't plan on downloading to catch up. My opinion will probably change if what you say is true, though.
You sound like you're not even giving it a chance though. WHy don't you look past the art and look at the story in general. The story is very epic and great if you just keep going. Heck I was like you but then when I gave the series a chance I was hooked by the Kuro arc. That's how great this series is. It's not just about Luffy wanting to be pirate king it's about the adventure, the friends he makes, the people he influences, and dreams. Dreams is a big part of this series.
It's the whole Will of D thing going on. We all know Luffy's going to be pirate king but the journey to that point makes it all the more fun. I bet you'd rather see them as bloodythirsty cut throats but that's not what the straw hat's are. They're not ordinary pirates at all.

Actually, its not just about Luffy wanting to be king. And people who are caught up, wouldnt you say that they kinda lost sight of those important dreams at this point? The reoccuring themes of this manga seem to be "friendship" "dreams" and "absolute justice vs moral justice". But those themes are kind of childish. Who needs friends and dreams as an adult? Why should moral justice concern us?

That makes no sense at all and you're just saying that because the entire forum has you convinced of this. Just because the original author didnt write it doesnt mean it sucks. Did Gene Roddenberry write Deep Space 9? No. The ONLY time you can ever say a filler is bad is if you have actually seen it and it actually is bad.

I’ve said before that I prefer Manga over Anime, in usually any and every situation. Fillers aren’t apart of the original storyline, so I don’t bother watching them. They may be somewhat good (Considering that they are fillers), but I really don’t care for them, no matter what.

Point is this is one of the better animes out. Far better then the overrated piece of crap Naruto *Trust me i use to like it till ep. 96, then wtf?* And though i enjoy a good old bleach ep i am NEVER bored with a ep of One piece. If the dude doesn;t like fillers, why not tell him what the non filler eps are?
Like.

Although, again, I prefer the manga. I wonder what the anime is going to do once it catches up to the manga, though? If they deviate, they are fucked.

I can't give up on you, Kiiroi Senkou... because... we're the same! [/Naruto]
I watched One Piece on a whim... it was before the dub and I wanted to know why people liked it... and so I torrented the first 30 episodes. I watched the first one. I was confused at how outdated and cliched it seemed to be. I didn't think very highly of it, and wanted to strangle Coby. I don't think I watched another episode that day.
I watched next few episodes over a couple of days, waiting to be impressed. It had its moments, yes, but nothing to become a fanboy over. Naruto had won me over during its episode 9 with Naruto and Sasuke vs. Zabuza. One Piece seemed a little boring in comparison. And the enemies were too quirky.
Liked Shanks. My favorite in the beginning. The twist of Kurahadol after it was established that he was actually a nice guy (or so I thought) mildly impressed me. That arc was slightly entertaining, but I still waited for a special turning moment where I would be taken by One Piece.
I felt I was getting tired of One Piece during the Baratie Arc. Sanji is probably one of my favorite characters, but it was formulaic. I liked the character development with Gin, but I hated Pearl and Don Krieg.
The Arlong arc was what did it for me, I guess. The Walk to Arlong Park was an extremely badass moment (it made me love that music) and Nami's flashback was very moving to me. Seeing Arlong take a Gomu Gomu no Axe to the face made me a One Piece fan. But after the arc I stopped watching. I couldn't see that One Piece could get much better than that.
AND MAN WAS I WRONG. When I came back to the series, I really enjoyed the Loguetown arc. Baroque Works was a little shaky for me, but I ended up liking that, too. Little Garden was pretty good. Drum was awesome.
Then came the Arabasta arc. It was the greatest anime-watching experience I have ever had. There was: a pressing civil war that had to be stopped. A conspiracy. Finally, badass enemies. And the pirate crew was finally starting to function and be completely hilarious together. I have never laughed so much watching anything. And the plot moves quickly and never becomes too predictable. All the time I had spent worrying whether I would like the series or not despite its flaws was quickly overshadowed.
And as the series continues to get better, I remain a fiercely loyal One Piece fan. Follow your temptations and just read the damn thing.

OT - I read the thread and it just seems to me that the OP would rather not broaden his view on the subject chalking everything off to "childishness"
I remember feeling the same when i started reading OP and got to Zoro. The art didnt help much either. But i stuck with it cos i heard far too many people say it was better than Naruto (which was my fav at that time). And boy did it pay off.
The Series just goes on a rocket ride after the crew hits Grandline, the first few arcs are insane and the first major arc is simply epic. Childish story, read further and prepare to eat your words.
Hell even where the manga is atm, there is still so much left to be revealed and Oda adds even more mysteries into the story.
To put it simply, people have already given you every single reason they can without spoiling you. The rest is up to you. Heed their words and download the manga and change your view on the best shonen manga series there is, or give up :\

Well, I know from experience that I was extremely elitist as a Naruto fan. A lot of Naruto watchers got into anime through Naruto, and they look down upon other animes. They somehow think they've stumbled onto the best one, and that impression gives the anime some kind of excluvisity to them.
This isn't all Naruto fans, but a lot of them.

I agree with sieg, so true... I became One piece fan just recently and it was by accident... it's all because d.lughie happened to stored 41 volumes of the original scanned manga about 5 months ago in his roommate's external hard drive. His friend which is my friend as well lend me his external and while i was exploring it, I decided to open a folder called "One Piece". Since then, my interest in one piece built up and I just love it cause the story and everything about it is awesome. I read the whole 41 volumes up to chapter 400 something in like 2 weeks muahahaha... very addictive!!!

It's the guys who translated it... the scanlations are crap compared to other series. One Piece never did have people who could make good scanlations. Might I suggest reading Stephen's scripts for better understanding of names and attacks. Since they're the most accurate translations

I was a fan of Naruto long before I got into One Piece, for the reasons many give for not reading it - the art was wonky, it looked silly, etc. But I'm so glad I did eventually give it a chance - because it's truly an astounding work of storytelling. I still follow both series, but in my view (and of course, this is only my own personal opinion), where the quality of Naruto's storytelling has fallen rapidly, One Piece's has maintained its own, even getting better with time.
What I love about One Piece is how engrossing the story and characters are. Yes, in the beginning, it seems silly ("Clown pirates? A Michael Jackson pirate? What the hell is this?"), but it's only setting the stage of this epic story of how this goofy kid becomes the Pirate King. On the onset it just appears to be a goofy little boy's adventure series, but through 400+ chapters, it's unfolded to reveal itself as a complex, yet simple examination in which everything in the story is intricately woven together, from minor throwaway bits of information to the entire history of the world he's created.
For example: what the hell is the One Piece treasure, anyway, and why would owning it make you the Pirate King? And how can someone like Luffy become the Pirate King? What does it mean to be the Pirate King anyway? You'll come to root for, believe, and KNOW Luffy is the next Pirate King - and not only just because "this is a shounen action series, and that's the main character's dream". It comes from the strength of the storytelling alone. This might sound like an exaggeration, but I truly believe this is what the storyline accomplishes. In order for Luffy to become the Pirate King, he's going to have to shake the entire world and its government to the core (and is already doing so, if you're up to date with the manga).
I also love it because Oda has depicted these characters so well that you feel like you almost know them personally. Again, I only speak for myself, and if you're just not into it, then (as Luffy might say) I guess that's that. But if you're unsure, or overwhelmed by the idea of having to follow it for another 300 chapters, then please do give it a chance, because there's an excellent possiblity you won't be disappointed. :)
Oh, and I'm in the manga >> anime camp. There's really no comparison, IMHO: the manga's the original. In terms of artwork, dialogue, and storytelling, the only person who knows (well, should know) exactly what he's doing and where he's going is the creator, Oda. In the anime, dialogue is changed, art quality degrades, and filler is added where the characters act OOC and plot elements are screwed up (e.g., the Alabasta filler where Ace hangs around for 6 episodes or something).
(I'm long-winded, in case you can't tell :P)

I agree with the both of you (Ligeia and d.lughie), for all of those people who haven't read one piece yet.. you should give it a chance.. think about it as to something to fill up your free time.. cause once you get hooked on it, you will be addicted to it.
Then again... 400 chapters of manga for me is like heaven... hehehe I can just sit in front of my pc and read all day. ^^
Gets more and more ''mature'' and serious the further you get.

my likes- the story and SOME characters r creative
dislikes- i hate all the main characters but zolo. seriously luffy's voice is so rusty and annoying it sounds like a woman trying to make fun of a man's voice. and they always argue about pointless stuff which isnt funny at all
another dislike r the FRUITS. seriously almost all the pirates but zolo earned the name of a pirate the EASY way by eating some cursed fruit:notrust i dont give a damn about how it takes a few years to handle the powers the point is that its a cheap way to gain someone's dream(ya luffy im looking at u). what cursed fruit did gold roger eat? ya exactley NONE
another dislike is that they try to make some of the characters TOO creative which causes them to look and act really retarded

Watch the sub or read the manga.
The dub has been scientifically proven to reduce brain cells. Don't believe me?

In your opinon, yeah. It probably is a heck of a lot better when they get in the Grand Line, but I'm not willing to download all the way to that.
So you like skipping movies to the end or reading the last page of a book before you are interested in the whole thing? There is a reason why OP is ranked so highly among manga and anime. There is also a reason why Kishimoto from Naruto doesn't really win any awards >.>
I hear alot of people went in OP with doubts, but thought it was cool from the get-go. You shouldn't judge on the style of art it has because that style of art is what seperates OP from any other series. The humor may seem "childish" to you, but I guess perverted jokes and farts are less "childish" lol?
The main reason's people are put off by the series:
1)The Art
2)The Powers
3)The Dubbed Anime
Every chapter supports the next chapter and the story development is priceless. Someone saying One Piece is childish is the equivalent of saying Kingdom Hearts is childish just because it has disney characters.
Hopefully you get a clue :oh
