Well, this may not answer your question, but...
Den-den refers to the word "Denwa", which means telephone.
Mushi means insect, but there's also a pun. When Japanese people pick up the phone, they typically say "Mushi-mushi."

wow.. thats interesting.. there's a lot of pun used in One Piece.. like the name of Zoro's skill.. are all pun I guess.. Oni Giri.. Tora Gari.. and stuff.. and I just realized from 265 that Oimo (the name of the other giant) means me too..
and then Kalifa's skill too
Golden Hour... the hour is a pun of awa (bubble)

but im also curious what happens to the one that was cut off, would it fall asleep to or just die with its main purpose of existace being destroyed. however u repair them at all i dont know, they really should put some of the OP techs in their own illustrated guide/data book for fans like me

it's a wacky looking telephone AND a snail.....I believe. I fear if we were ever given the chance to ask Oda-sensei directly he wouldn't give us a serious answer

maybe they work kinda like zoro's magicial 'non-ventriloquism'. they speak with their hearts and when one goes dead, the other one is so sad it stays quiet....
this is what im referring to, straight from my sig (and an SBS corner...:P )
Reader: You know, with Zoro's 3-sword style, I don't think he'd be able to talk with the sword in his mouth... Could it be...ventriloquism?
Oda: IT'S HIS HEART SPEAKING.
