Ummm, I believe the thread below is the Latin-teaching thread. What level Latin are you taking?

This is my second year, and I would say that I'm intermediate with grammar and begginer with vocab. Today's first lesson is very simple.
Latinum Vocabularia
Latin to English
In..............In
Et..............and
Romana......Rome
Graecia.......Greece
Gallia..........Gaul
Hispania......Spain
Africa.........Africa
Imperium.....empire
Magnus.......Big
Parvus........small
Pauci..........few
Vocabularium...vocabulary
non............not
est.............est
sunt............are
Italia............Italy
Provincia.......Province
Habet...........has
Habent.........they have
insula...........island
fluvius..........river
Num?...........starts off a question and usually expects negative connotation
Lesson 1: Imperium Romana
In Romana non est Gaullia. In Romana non est Africa. In Romana est Italia. Italia est provincia Romanae. Africa non est provincia Romanae.
Graecia multae insulae habet. Cretos et Lesbos et Chios pauci sunt.
Danuvius et Rhenus magnus fluvii est.
Num pauci fluvii in imperio Romano?
Your answer below. Feel free to make your own sentences too out of the vocabularium.
Grammaticus (Grammar)
The 1st declension is for words that end with -a. it goes like this using Romana:
Nom. Romana
Gen. Romanae
So far in this chapter we have covered the nominative and the genitive cases. The nominative case is used for subjects and Predicate Nouns/adjs.
The Genitive case is used to show possesion.
*Do not get yourself caught up with imperium just yet. That is second declension which we will not go over 'till next time.
Still, with the Genitive case "Romanae" translated would be "of Rome." Is everybody catching on?
And if anybody gets this question right, other than Gurke and people that have already studied latin, I will write them a congratulatory note in the next lesson.
Gurke

should we translate it now ? well then I start:
Rome isn`t in Gaul.Rome isn`t in Africa.Rome is in Italy.Rome is a province of Italy. Rome isn`t a province of Africa.
well that`s enough someone else should translate it
Kakashi-fan
06-04-2006, 06:36 PM
Very nice!!!
Gurke
06-04-2006, 06:45 PM
that text is very easy and I`ve been learning latin for nearly two years now
so it shouldn`t be that difficult for me to translate it^^
Kakashi-fan
06-04-2006, 06:51 PM
Well not for you maybe but for the other members on the site maybe.......
YOu should post your own Latin stuff here, on this thread. Or maybe I could start a fc..........only if you would do it too tho.......................
Gurke
06-04-2006, 06:55 PM
well then I`ll post the first chapter of my latin book tomorrow or the day after tomorrow
Kakashi-fan
06-04-2006, 07:06 PM
Thanks. latin is easy, right?
Gurke
06-04-2006, 07:10 PM
dunno I always go to the french lessons instead of the latin lessons so I`m not that good but our test are always easier than the chapters so I have no problems
Kakashi-fan
06-04-2006, 07:35 PM
I can't grasp onto french grammar. I can say a few things tho...
Gurke
06-04-2006, 07:40 PM
well I think that french is easier than latin
Kakashi-fan
06-04-2006, 07:45 PM
no no no, you have it all wrong. Latin is sooooo much easier to understand, their grammar follows the same as english, well some of it does anywayz.
Gurke
06-04-2006, 07:49 PM
well I think that the latin grammar is similiar to german grammer if you want to decline the nouns and the rest...
Kakashi-fan
06-04-2006, 08:06 PM
I'd be happy to decline all 5!!!
a ae ae am a ae arum is as is, us i o um o is orum is os is, (no nom.) is i em e es (i)um ibus es ibus, us us ui um u us uum ibus us ibus, es ei ei em e es erum ebus es ebus. I beleive that they are all Masc., except for 1st declnsion.

Ubi simulacrum Veneris venit ,

In this Chapter there are two important grammar things.
First the person:
After every adjective there is a letter which indicates who does this adjective. For example "clamat" in the first line. The infinitive would be "clamare", but in the sentence it's "Populos clamat" (The people shout) so there is a t replaceing the re which every infinitive has.
There are 6 different suffix
I - o
You - s
He/She/It - t
We - mus
You - tis
They - nt
So if you wanna say "we sit" you have to get the word for to sit, which is sedere, and add the suffix for we, which is mus. --> sedemus we sit. I hope you got that xD.
Second grammar thing is the Nominative and the Genitive.
The nominative indicates who does anything. Who or what. So look at the first sentence, "Populus clamat". The people have to be shouting (clamat so it is populus. Every noun has a position in a sentence and has to be suffixed with the 5 different cases (Nom, Gen, Dat, Akk, Abl.).
The Genitive is the "who's" case, like we say in Germany, dunno who it's in English. So look at the sentence "Marcus Ulpius Traianus Caesar ,
consul , tribunus , pater patriae", it says Caesar is a consul, a tribun and the father OF the fatherland (well i did not make the book :>). So, who's father is he? The father of the fatherland. So to fatherlands normal form, which is patria has to be added an ae which is the genitive form.
I think this was the grammar in this chapter, I'm not a teacher so it's maybe not that good understandable.

Isn't this chapter thoroughly confusing everyone but the three of us? If you had to start off latin using this first chapter wouldn't you confused too? Anyways I was going to start off teaching the accusative case and some more vocab, but it doesn't look like anybody wants to read my posts. If you do, post your own post below. And the -o,-s,-t,-mus,-tis,-nt endings are really confusing for others, but I like how hard you start off, Gurke. And you too, Debil. Did you guys want to start a Latin fc with me, because I've never found some people so interested as me into latin!!!
Rursus Grammaticus
For turning sedere into sit, you take off the-re. There are four conjugations:
#1 -ere (like eh-reh)
#2 -are (like ah-reh)
#3 -ire (like ee-reh)
#4 -ere (like ay-reh).
And those are the endings for infinitives so for -o,-s,-t,-mus,-tis,-nt you just have to take off the -re, remember your cases, and hope you get it right.
Gurke, ave means hail, not as in the noun, like to a king in the first sentence.
Ubi means where, ut, "Ubi est?"= like, "Where is it?"
For tacet, Tace means talk (ta-kay; as a command to one person), Tacet means don't talk to singular or multiple people, et Tacete (talk-ay-tay) means tacere tantum multis populis, and Tacete means to talk only to multiple people. Kinda confusing, right? But you can use that first sentence on the same paragraph as this sentence is for things like Salve (hello, altho there is no salvet in latin), Vale (goodbye, the second rule also doesn't apply and to all other verbs that you should judge.)

Gurke, Basye, and Kiri are the newest Co-owners (and only members)!!! Would you like to join Debil, I can't make you a co-owner but you can become a member, you'd be the first one?

Interesting, I was under the impression that no one but the Germans were crazy enough to learn Latin.
Well ... "learn" ... I got my Latinum a few years ago and already forgot most of it again. Dead languages are kind of pointless.
Kakashi-fan
06-09-2006, 12:20 PM
Anthriel, dead languages are not pointless. They speak latin in Latium, in Masses, and in other places. So much english and other languages derives from latin. Latin was spoken in Europe 500 years ago before one king pronounced everything differently which created middle English, then another king to english. Spanish is like pure latin. Dead languages are not pointless. And I like to learn latin and I'm 15% german.
Gurke
06-09-2006, 02:46 PM
no one but the Germans ??? hey I AM GERMAN !!!
