When Vegeta first comes to earth he uses his Galik Gun (or however you spell it) with enough power to blow up the earth, Goku overcomes that with a stronger blast. Vegeta is then hit by the stronger blast and is only launched into space.

Kamehameha > Angel Arm (and its still not always an insta-kill)
